Jean Carley

Dear Church Family On Thursday afternoon, Jean, our beautiful sister in the Lord, our BFF (best friend forever), our administrator and our Church ‘Mammy’ went to be with the Lord. Jean Carley was a delight to know and work with. She was a lady in the truest meaning of the word; A joy to be around; A carrier of tasks and people in a burdensome environment; A whole hearted colleague and a great ally. I am lost for words. How do you describe beauty and grace? At this time our thoughts and prayers and love and hugs are with our precious brother Robert and his great family; Jonathan, Joanna, James, Deborah and Timothy. We pray also for their extended families, friends and neighbours. God bless and sustain them one and all. St Marks Church is another family with an aching heart and so Lord, I ask you to carry and sustain us through this painful season. Jesus Christ is Lord! Love Sean and Susan Jean Carley’s funeral will be at 10.30am on Monday September 12th at St Marks Church. Dress colourfully-No dark clothes allowed!! (Jeans orders!)

The Academy

THE ACADEMY Many of you are already familiar with our DISCIPLESHIP ACADEMY which runs from Tuesday to Friday from 8am to 1pm. This is an intense course of discipleship and grounding in the word of God. It is a tough but very gratifying year of stretching and learning which really suits the person who seeks to intentionally go deeper with Christ. The Course will start on Tuesday September 20th. For those who are interested in this please see either Sandie Tutty or Pastor Anna Tormey. ACADEMY – FOUNDATIONS We will be running our adult discipleship school on Sundays from 10.30am to 11.45am every Sunday starting on September 11th in the top back rooms of our Church. It is known as ACADEMY FOUNDATIONS. The course is overseen by Ciaran Buckley. ACADEMY FOUNDATIONS consists of three courses running simultaneously in the same location. John and Helen Mullarkey will run the Alpha for SEEKERS, VERY RECENT CONVERTS AND NEW ARRIVALS at St. Marks. Ciaran Buckley will run the next class up for the NEW CONVERTS AND NEW CHURCH MEMBERS – The ‘On Your Marks’ Course. and Liam and Diane Hennessey will teach the class FOR THE GROWING BELIEVER – This is the ‘Freedom In Christ’ material. These three classes will run from 10.30am to 11.45am in three different class rooms at the same time. All attending will then attend the 12pm service as part of their discipleship. The discipleship class is not instead of Church!! EVENING LEADERSHIP ACADEMY On Thursday evenings starting on September 22nd we will run our EVENING LEADERSHIP ACADEMY. The class will start at 7pm and finish at 9pm. We will begin at 7pm with a BIBLE STUDY with Pastor Sean followed by a ‘cuppa’ and then a class on BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION with Sandie Tutty. This course will really suit those who cannot make our daytime Academy but know that God is expanding their place of influence at this time. This is also for people who intentionally want to grow as a leader and as a disciple of Jesus. For more information talk to Pastor Sean or Sandie Tutty.

Learning to be content

Recently I’ve been thinking about what Paul meant when he said he had learned to be content whatever the circumstances. (Phil 4:11-12 – Not that I am implying that I was in any personal want, for I have learned how to be content (satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or disquieted) in whatever state I am. I know how to be abased and live humbly in straitened circumstances, and I know also how to enjoy plenty and live in abundance. I have learned in any and all circumstances the secret of facing every situation, whether well-fed or going hungry, having a sufficiency and enough to spare or going without and being in want.) The satisfaction of Paul’s material needs was neither the reason nor the measure of his joy in life. So often we can get caught up with the have’s and have not’s …but regardless of what we have in the physical world, we can choose to live out of a place of abundance (in spirit) or lack. Before the creation of mankind God prepared a world of useful and pleasant things for man’s survival and enjoyment. Genisis describes them as nothing more than ‘things’. They were only ever designed as sustenance…mere things, external to man. It was God alone who would have the greatest and most important place in the heart of man; you see our hearts were never designed to make room for things. A healthy soul is one that counts everything else as futile in comparison to the greatness of knowing God. Something that fights so often to find residence in the heart of man, that creeps in and allures our affections is our ‘self’ life. The things we allow to take up space on the throne of our heart cause Christ to become sidelined. What a terrible error. The things and gifts of God were never designed to take the place of God. A few years ago I read a book by Tozer and a chapter which always stood out to me was entitled ‘The blessedness of possessing nothing’. How true is that! He says ” The blessed ones who possess the Kingdom are they who have repudiated (rejected the authority of) every external thing and have rooted from their hearts all sense of possessing”. Abraham knew what it was to surrender his greatest love, his greatest possession. When we commit everything to Him we find fulfillment, its when we try to hold onto things and accumulate things that we lose them. Every good and perfect gift comes from his hand (James 1:17) but it should always be his face and not his hand that we seek. What do you need to part with today? Is there anything rivelling God’s position in your heart…where do your affections lie? In him? or in things..a person? Just a thought… Blessings Kim
